This 3 day luxury train safari meanders slowly from Pretoria to Durban (or vice versa) stopping along the way for game drives in 2 varied and unique game reserves, an Anglo Boer war battlefield tour with a world class historian and a visit to an unusual and influential African ceramics studio. Itinerary:
Day 1: Rovos Rail FB
Board the Pride of Africa for a 10h00 departure from Rovos Rail’s private station in Capital Park. Settle into your suite and freshen up before joining fellow travellers in the midway lounge car or observation carriage at the rear of the train. Enjoy lunch as spectacular scenery unfurls from your window. The train climbs to 2,146 meters at Majuba Hill and dinner is served before the train stops for the night at Elandslaagte.
Day 2: Rovos Rail FB
An early wake up call for a game drive in the Nambiti Conservancy, a 20,000 hectare, Big Five, private bush retreat boasting incredible biodiversity and scenery. Brunch is served back on the train as it travels towards the town of Escort where you disembark for either a battlefield tour of Spioenkop, the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Anglo Boer war, or a second game drive locally. After sundowners and a traditional dinner at Spioenkop Lodge, overnight on the train.
Day 3: Rovos Rail FB
Breakfast is served as the train descends the escarpment en route to Lions River station. Disembark for a visit to the Ardmore ceramics gallery where the art reflects the Zulu people’s sense of rhythm, colour, dance and song, as well as the spirit of the African imagination. After an equestrian display and tea overlooking the river the train traverses the spectacular Valley of a Thousand Hills before arriving in Durban after lunch.
