For many visitors to South Africa, there is no finer way to see the country than on this popular 48 hr, weekly, luxury train journey between Pretoria and Cape Town. From the grasslands of the gold rich Highveld trundle through the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo, spectacular mountain ranges and the scenic wine lands of the Cape until the imposing bulk of Table Mountain announces your arrival in Cape Town.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Rovos Rail FB
At 15h00 The Pride of Africa departs Rovos Rail’s station in Capital Park. Time to freshen up in your suite before joining fellow travellers in the observation carriage or the midway lounge. Dinner is served in the dining car at 19h30
Day 2: Rovos Rail FB
After breakfast the train approaches Kimberley famed for its diamond mine. An opportunity to witness spectacular flocks of up to 23,000 flamingos feeding on a shallow lake before disembarking for a morning tour of the city, the ‘Big Hole’ and the Mine Museum. Board the train in time for lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure, mingling with your fellow travelers or enjoying the scenery that unfolds from your window.
Day 3: Rovos Rail FB
This morning the train arrives at the charming old world Karoo town of Matjiesfontein. Disembark for a leisurely stroll through this historic settlement and visit the museum or a collection of historic cars and railway carriages. By 12h00 the train reaches the first of four tunnels, one of which is 13.5 kms long, taking you through the Hex River Pass. Lunch is served as you pass through the beautiful Hex River Valley and the town of Worcester. The famous silhouette of Table Mountain welcomes you to Cape Town where your journey ends.
