Which regions should I consider?

As a rule of thumb the malaria free Cape and Garden Route will appeal to families with children of all ages from babies right through to young adults. The pleasant climate, relatively short distances and variety of attractions, activities, child friendly accommodations and restaurants makes this the most versatile and popular of South Africa's family destinations. A popular option is to add a child friendly safari either in one of the malaria free reserves of the Eastern Cape or further North in the Madikwe National Park.

Our advise is to try not to include too many different destinations in your itinerary but leave plenty of time for relaxing and unwinding - everything takes more time than you expect with young children and too much time spent in the car as well as changing accommodation every second night can be unsettling.


For those with slightly older children you might consider an authentic safari within the legendary Kruger National Park or even explore some of the more remote and wild areas of Botswana where sharing the experience of a genuine, 4x4 safari expedition, game viewing and bush camping is sure to create memories that last a life time!



What attractions & activities can we expect?
The diversity of attractions and activities available in South Africa, and especially in the Cape and Garden Route is guarenteed to keep children, parents and grandparents alike entertained for the entire holiday. Much of what is on offer is nature and outdoor based and can be considered good, clean, stimulating and healthy fun. Sharre a beach with a colony of penguins, view sea creatures from seahorses to sharks in the aquarium, enjoy boat trips to see seals, dolphins, great white sharks or whales, ride on a steam train, ostrich or even an elephant... the list of attractiona on offer for the whole family is truly endless.


For teenagers with energy to burn enjoy hikes, mountain biking, surfing, sand boarding, sea kayaking, zip-lining (fufi slide) through the tree canopy, bungi jumping or abseiling and for the deisel junkies try power boating, quad biking or helicopter flights.

Family and child friendly accommodation can be organized to suit your family's needs: add a 3rd bed or a cot to your room, request inter-leading rooms, a 2 or 3 bedroom suite or simply book a serviced apartment or private villa for your family's exclusive use. Of course babysitters and child minders can be arranged while play rooms and specific children's activities and facilities are available in many lodges allowing you to relax with the peace of mind that your children are in good hands and having the time of their lives.

And what about a safari?

Safaris too can be specifically selected and tailored to suite the age profiles of your family with authentic, but safe, big game safaris possible even with young children. I look at my daughter on her first safari at the age of 2 and a half. She loved it and the memories that I have of her eyeball to eyeball with her first wild elephant will stay with me for life. However as arule of thumb children start to really appreciate a safari from 6 years old onwards so if travelling with young children make sure you select a safari lodge that offers supervised children's activities and facilities. Malaria is an added burden that most people don't want to worry about with the children and so for many selecting a malaria free safari destination is a priority when travelling with young children.
