South African Culture and History

The combination of tribes, races and cultures, the globally strategic and economic importance of South Africa, as well as the controversial apartheid era of the last century, has made for a very colourful past. The Cape is alive with history dating back to 1652 when the Dutch first set up a permanent camp beneath Table Mountain and the influence of various groups including the French Huguenots, the Cape Malays’ and the British as well as the many local African tribes can still be felt today.

Highlights of South African history and culture include San (bushman) rock art - some of which dates back thousands of years, the Cape Dutch era in the Western Cape, the discovery of diamonds in Kimberley and gold in Johannesburg, the Anglo-Zulu war in KwaZulu-Natal, the Anglo-Boer wars, the colourful cultures of the local African tribes and the many reminders of the apartheid era that ended only thirteen years ago.
