The route between Pretoria and Cape Town is a 27-hour journey of 1,600 kms (994 miles), through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery offered by the African sub-continent.
Weaving a distinctive thread of blue across the tapestry of a captivating landscape, the Blue Train winds its way through steep mountain passes, lush valleys of orchards and vineyards, windswept desert plains and the undulating tracts of bushveld as it makes the classic connection between the monolith of Table Mountain and the jacaranda-lined streets of Pretoria.
Pretoria to Cape Town: On the southbound trip, the train departs from Pretoria at 9:50 and arrives in Cape Town just after lunch the following day. En route there is a stopover and excursion to the 'Big Hole' in Kimberley, the largest mad-made hole on the planet. Diamonds were discovered here in 1869 producing one of history's great rushes for the glitter of minearal wealth. Today Kimberley offers the visitor an intriguing glimpse into an age of exploration and obsession.
Cape Town to Pretoria: On the northbound journey, the train leaves Cape Town just before noon and arrives at Pretoria in time for high tea the following day. It stops at the historic town Matjiesfontein, a slice of sunbleached Voctoriana in the mystical midst of the Great Karoo. where guests can indulge in the ambience of a bygone era and visit the famous Lord Milner Hotel and the old car museum.
